The 997 is the sixth generation of the 911 and sold between 2004 and 2013. Production of the Carrera and Carrera S began immediately with the first Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S being delivered to customers in late 2005. The Turbo and GT3 went on sale in late 2006 and the GT2 in 2007.  Targa and cabriolet versions of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S were also available.

Focusing on the suspension, we see the passive spring & shocker system fitted to the Carrera models and on the Carrera S and above we see the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) solution applied. The PASM system allows cabin control of the firmness of the shock-absorber for the first time in a 911.

Given the age of these cars now, it is no surprise to see leaking shock-absorbers of either type, and we have also seen evidence of broken springs due to wear, age and rust.  The obvious fix is to replace the parts in question, in pairs at least if not all four, and there are now options to not only replace, but also to improve the handling and road holding of the car given the improvement in technology since they were released 20 years ago!

A helpful way to consider the suspension on the car is to ask 1 – is there a problem or are we looking for improvements? 2 – is the car being used as a daily, a weekender or for the track?  3 – how do you want the car to feel (compliant, as when new, improved handling).  We recommend discussing with us the following options, depending upon how the car is planned to be used and the budget.

Third Party

The lowest cost option.  Whilst we do access third party solutions, we only do so in collaboration with our customer, and will only fit products which we would feel comfortable fitting to our own cars.  One to watch for, is if the car has a Porsche Warranty, this could be invalidated by the use of non-Porsche parts.

Genuine Porsche

(example price – 997.1 C2 front and rear dampers only RRP £1900.44 inc VAT*)

In conjunction with a repair, we will offer a like-for-like Porsche branded product purchased from Porsche themselves. This is where the customer requires the car to “feel like it used to / new” and perhaps there is a Porsche Warranty on the car.  Whilst these will feel like an appropriate purchase, don’t forget that the design of the solution is up to 20 years old, so yes, it may feel like it was when new, but can we do better with newer technology?

KW Automotive

(example price – 997.1 C2 front and rear dampers only KW Variant 1 Kit RRP £2550.18 inc VAT*)

KW offer a wide range of products at competitive prices.  Whilst we need to study the exact solutions for the 997, the solutions come in three broad categories, specifically linked to the types of use the car is going to be subject to.  They are:-

Street Comfort – easy top use and improve ride comfort

Street Performance – improving the dynamics and look of the suspension

Track Performance – improved lap times for the track

Bilstein

(example price – 997.1 C2 front and rear dampers only B4 Kit RRP £1431.84 inc VAT*)

With over 140 years of engineering expertise, Bilstein has consistently delivered innovative suspension solutions. . One of the primary benefits of upgrading to Bilstein shock-absorbers is the noticeable improvement in handling and control, being engineered to provide precise and responsive damping, allowing for better road contact and reduced body roll during cornering. This leads to enhanced stability, improved traction, and increased driver confidence, especially when navigating challenging road conditions or spirited driving.

Nitron

(example price – 997.1 C2 front and rear dampers only R1 Kit RRP £3021.00 inc VAT*)

For the past couple of years we have been installing Nitron suspension as an Authorised Dealer / Installer and have now started to develop our own bespoke system the the 997 Generation GT3.  The installation parameters for these solutions will be unique to us. We also use Nitron on our own racing car and are delighted with the results.  Nitron systems are designed with your desired driving experience in mind, and offer three overall solutions :-

NTR Roadsport Coilover Kit – enhanced performance on the road

NTR R1 Coilover Kit – high performance for the road and some track days

NTR 3 Coilover Kit – ultimate track performance

In the end, it’s all about how you want to feel in the car, and how you want the car to feel under you.  All of the research in the world can only be enhanced by talking to people who have installed, and driven the results of all of these types of solution and we have done that from classic, through street and on our racing car.

So give us a call, we’ll pop the kettle on and we can sit down with you and understand what you want from your 997, be it repair or upgrade, and work together to deliver the exact outcomes you want.  After all, we are Porsche drivers before all else, and are only satisfied when we have delighted you, our customers and friends.
